2019 CPM Teacher Conference!

We host this conference as an investment in the most important educational resource that America has—the classroom teacher. We are honored that you chose to join us. It is our hope that what you saw, heard, did, and learned at this conference will leave you motivated and inspired to continue the pursuit of mathematics with your students and colleagues.

We extend a thank you to those who were willing to present their ideas and strategies with their colleagues. We hope you enjoyed your time in the beautiful San Francisco area and left energized to continue empowering your students. We hope to see you next year!

Consider speaking at the 2020 CPM Teacher Conference: February 22 & 23, 2020
Share your experience and the lessons you have learned teaching students how to reason, solve problems, and communicate mathematically.

Speaker proposals are due by May 15, 2019.

As lead speaker, you will receive one complimentary registration and a conference grant to help defray the cost of the conference. The amount of the conference grant has yet to be determined.

Why Identifying the Mathematical Goal is the Most Important Practice
Of the eight NCTM Principles to Action Practices, why is the first one, Identifying the Mathematical Goal, the most important? Having a clear understanding of the mathematical goal of a lesson is essential for planning around any of the other seven practices. Want to improve Purposeful Questioning? What is the Mathematical Goal? Want to help students with Productive Struggle? What is the Mathematical Goal? Gain a deeper understanding of CPM storylines and how to use them from one of the writers.

How Can My Study Teams Increase Mathematical Discourse and Accountability?
Are you frustrated with off-task behavior? Not sure how to stop a child from dominating the team? Do you want to get better at measuring which students "got it"? Having trouble getting lessons wrapped up? Then this session is for you! We will model Study Team & Teaching Strategies to decide how they can help you solve these problems. Leave feeling confident on how to use these effective strategies, to increase mathematical discourse, and build individual accountability in your classroom.

Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) & CPM Collaboratively
Would you like to see your students engaging in a balanced approach of Mathematics? Imagine strengthening their conceptual and computational fluency simultaneously. Cognitively Guided Mathematics (CGI) starts with what children already know about math and build on it to move them toward deeper levels of understanding. Children will solve the problems in ways that make sense to them. During problem solving, multiple student strategies are shared and featured. CGI in CPM reinforces students' capacities to problem solve by giving them the opportunities to think in creative ways and actively form strategies using what they know, instead of passively receiving information. In CGI, the teacher's role dramatically shifts from teacher to facilitator. Engaging in CPM through elements of CGI can create the same shift.
Teachers will experience how to incorporate CGI in CPM. We will look at different components of a CGI model such as balanced mathematics for fluency, honoring student strategies, number choice in problems, anticipate student strategies, and some number talks to strengthen conceptual understanding. During our time together, participants will actively engage in all of these models through problem-solving using the CPM curriculum. It's our hope that teachers walk away with routines and structures that they can begin implementing in their CPM classroom.

Heterogenous Classes - How We Can Improve Mathematics Education for All Students
Detracking our classrooms is often a hot button issue in our schools, and met with resistance by many parents. In this session, we will discuss how you can successfully create a CPM classroom that allows for successful integration of all levels of students, and the data to back up the claim.

Chapter Closure: Let's Have Some Fun!
This session is repeated on Saturday at 10:05.  The old school way of reviewing before a test needs to be thrown out the window! Get the kids up and moving. Get them talking about what they've learned. Why not let them strut their stuff a little. We will share several of our ideas of some successful chapter closure techniques we have used and open it up for attendees to share some of theirs as well. Using these tools can be so much fun that your students will forget they are studying!

Liven Up Your Middle School Technology Toolkit!
In this session, participants will create a QR code cube, explore Screencastify and Flippity (both are free Google chrome extensions) and Seesaw. Each technology idea encourages student collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Student samples will be available to look at.  Bring a computer to get the most out of this session.
